Sometimes referred to as telepaediatrics, the use of videoconferencing for the remote assessment of infants, children and adolescents is an important clinical tool for clinicians, patients and their families. Fast access to specialist services, often some distance away, can make a considerable difference to the outcomes of vulnerable patient’s health, no more so than the very young.
The use of telemedicine in paediatric cardiology is a good example of the application, where a new born child can be assessed visually by a specialist who can also view essential information such as echocardiograms, ultrasound and vital signs whilst observing the patient and interacting with the guardians and medical staff.
Joint management of complex cases can provide valuable support to local clinicians and healthcare staff. It can also improve patient care and outcomes as well as help to avoid unnecessary transfers between health centres, which can sometimes be traumatic and life threatening.
