Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings for cancer care were introduced to ensure consistency of high quality care is delivered across the NHS in the UK. They rapidly became the standard method in oncology and are the main decision-making forum today for many branches of specialist medicine.
Initially, this required many specialists including surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, carers, specialist nursing staff and Consultants to attend meetings that would often take less time than the journey to attend. Each individual’s participation was a fraction of the overall meeting time, further highlighting the inefficiency and impact of attendance in person.
Videoconferencing offered real alternative to this, helping to improve the efficiency and work/life balance of all participating staff, reduce overall time and cost for each tumour group meeting for each MDT across the NHS, it helps to a lower carbon emissions due to less travel and probably most significantly, it has improved patient management and outcomes by reducing waiting times and assisting in quicker treatment pathway decisions.
MultiSense Communications has a wealth of experience in this specialist healthcare application, having designed and implemented many MDT solutions for a number of Cancer Networks and individual Trusts across the UK.
